Nigeria and Sierra Leone have expressed their commitments to revive the Joint Commission between them with a view to strengthening their bilateral relations.
This is contained in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesperson, Mr Clement Aduku in Abuja.
Aduku said that the decision was reached in a meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, and Dr Samura Wilson-Kamara, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Sierra Leone.
He said that Wilson-Kamara who led a high-powered delegation from Sierra Leone had a very fruitful discussions with Onyeama on the rescue of the kidnapped senior Sierra Leonian diplomat; and other matters of bilateral interest.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Sierra Leonian Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Maj.-Gen.Alfred Nelson (rtd) was kidnapped on the Abuja – Kaduna Highway on June 30 and rescued by the Nigerian police on July 5.
He said the Ministers also exchanged views on global affairs including, notably, the reform of the United Nations Security Council.
The UN issue will be on the agenda of the 27th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union taking place in Kigali, Rwanda from July 10 to 18.
According to the him both ministers took note of the current state of affairs in the Security Council reform effort and the multi-dimensional challenges in the process.
“They underscored the need for greater solidarity among African countries in the reform effort.
“The meeting reflects the excellent longstanding relations between Nigeria and Sierra Leone,” he added.
