Muslim clerics endorse child-spacing for healthy family

Some Islamic clerics in Zaria, Kaduna State, have identified child spacing as the best option to establish an ideal, healthy, responsible and productive family.

They spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews in Zaria on Monday.

Mallam Auwal Musa of the Islamic Trust of Nigeria (ITN), said a space of at least two to three years is good enough for the mother to regain her health and for the child to grow healthier and stronger.

Musa said that Qur’an explicitly declared two years as a child-bearing period, within which a mother could nurse her child.

He said that Prophet Muhammed (SAW), called on Muslims to marry and procreate so that he would be proud of them in the day of judgment.

“However, the prophet will never be proud of miscreants, gangsters, hoodlums, hooligans, drunkards, among others.

“It is clear that the prophet will certainly be happy to see a large crowd of responsible and noble people, who follow his teachings, even after his demise,” he said.

He said Islam does not in any way encourage people to produce children more than they could cater for.

According to him, Islam prescribes that every man will testify before God Almighty, how he administers his family and how he brings his children up.

Also contributing, Malam Suleiman Ibrahim, the Iman of Kaduna Agricultural Development Project (KADP) Mosque, at PZ, Zaria, urged child-bearing mothers to embrace child spacing.

“This will give the mother the time to regain the energy lost during pregnancy up to the delivery stage and become healthier while the child will grow healthier too.

“In essence, Islam, to some extent, encourages child spacing, hence the need for us to embrace it for stronger, healthier and vibrant family,” he said.
