Angola swears in new 220 legislators

The 220 new Angolan legislators elected after the general elections on Aug. 23 took the oath of office on Thursday in Luanda.

The constitutive session of the National Assembly was presided over by Speaker, Fernando Santos, who was also re-elected as Speaker on Thursday.

The IV Legislature of the National Assembly for 2017/2022 counts on 150 parliamentarians of the ruling People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) had 51 members and 16 of the Broad Convergence for the Salvation of Angola – Electoral Coalition (CASA-CE).

The Social Renewal Party (PRS) had two seats while the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA) one.

A total of 120 parliamentarians out of the 220 elected MPs are debutants to the National Assembly while 59 are women.
