18 percent of Nigerian girls marry under 15 – UNICEF

The United Nations Children Education Fund, UNICEF’s Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey (MICS 4) 2011, has revealed a five percent increase in the number of girls married before age 15, five percent up from the 13 percent figure of 2007.
Presently, the figure stands at 18 percent.
Speaking at this year’s celebration of the Day of the African Child with the theme “25 Years after the Adoption of the African Children’s Charter: Accelerating our Collective Efforts to End Child Marriage in Africa,‟ UNICEF said that incidences of child marriage is on the increase in Nigeria.
