President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that all military checkpoints across Nigeria be dismantled immediately, according to a statement by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Aliyu Ismail.
Details of the directive are still being awaited, and it is unclear whether checkpoints in states in the North-east, set up in the wake of the Boko Haram insurgency, would also be removed.
