An explosion went off near a Mosque in Kano, Monday night, with the suicide bomber ferrying the explosive feared dead, according to witnesses and a police official.
Witnesses say the casualty figure in the incident is unclear at the time of this report, although a police spokesperson said the teenage female suicide bomber has been confirmed dead.
The spokesperson for the Kano Police Command, Magaji Majiya, said the teenage bomber detonated the explosive at 9:30 p.m Monday after she was prevented from accessing the Umar Bin Khatab mosque along Zaria Road.
The incident happened just as faithful were dispersing after observing the late night (Tarawih) prayer, witnesses said.
“She was trying to cross over to the mosque, but she was stopped. She immediately detonated the bomb and died immediately,” Majiya said.
The Monday night’s Kano bombing came barely 24 hours after a similar attack on a restaurant and a mosque in Jos, the Plateau State capital, left about 44 persons dead and 48 others injured.
Another attack on a church in Potiskum, Yobe state, also on Sunday, killed six people, all with no one claiming responsibility for the attacks.
Security agencies however believe the bombings have the imprimatur of the extremist Boko Haram sect that has been killing and maiming innocent Nigerians in the past six years.
