A young Nigerian lady, Uju Amanambu, has unveiled her debut novel titled A Broken Rose. The colourful novel, depicting the woes of mental illness, was launched with at cocktail event at Terra Kulture, Victoria Island, Lagos on August 1, 2015.
Featuring reading sessions and a stage adaption of the book as well as a musical performance by soul musician, Zubby, the book launch was well attended by Nigerians from all walks of life including relatives. Not missing are colleagues of Uju, a Project Management professional with one of Nigeria’s financial institutions, as well as writers.
A Broken Rose focuses on a young woman who deals with abuse, alienation and torture by the people of an impoverished and deeply religious village who stigmatise anything considered strange and which they do not understand.
‘A Broken Rose is not just a story, even though it’s a very good one and a thriller, more importantly, it is a call to reform in a society where most things we do are either superstitious or religious. I hope to educate and sensitize the wider society on the woes of alienating mentally ill people’, Uju said at the event.
