South Africa marks its 22nd freedom day today Wednesday, April 27, 2016.
The country is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, with close to 55 million people as at 2015.
South Africa declared independence from Britain on May 31, 1910, but the country celebrates April 27 as it’s Freedom Day – the day in 1994 when the first democratic, non-racial elections were held as remembrance of the restoration of dignity and human rights after a period of racism and apartheid.
Jacob Zuma – elected by parliament – has been ruling the country since 2009, following his party’s victory in the 2009 and 2014 general elections.

According to Channels TV; some civil society groups gathered in Johannesburg and the country’s capital, Cape Town to call for the President’s resignation earlier today.
