Rivers State Governor, Barr. Nyesom Wike has pledged the determination of his administration to always prioritise the welfare of workers in the state.
Wike stated this in his address during the May Day celebration, which held at the Yakubu Gowon Liberation Station, Elekahia, Port Harcourt, yesterday.
Wike, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, commended workers for diligently contributing to the efforts of his Administration to build a new Rivers State.
The governor urged workers to remain committed to the ideals of selfless service and development, noting that the process of massive development being witnessed across the state will be sustained.
He particularly thanked the workers for the unflinching support that have extended to his administration since his assumption of office, assuring them that they will continue to enjoy key position in his administration because, he considers them critical to the attainment of set goals in the state’s development agenda.
Meanwhile, senior civil servants in Rivers State have frowned at the refusal of workers, who have attained the mandatory retirement age in the state civil service to exit.
Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, in the state, Comrade Hyginus Chika Onuegbu, disclosed the position of the senior civil servants in his address during the celebration.
The TUC chairman, who stated that the Nigerian economy is in bad shape, said all sectors of the economy are bleeding due to the fall in crude oil price since June 2014, adding that, the situation is exacerbated by pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, and general insecurity.
