All burial ceremonies in Benin City are to be performed before the commencement of the ‘Emwinekhua’ or obsequies of the late Oba of Benin, Oba Erediauwa, the Benin traditional council announced yesterday.
The Iyase of Benin, Chief Sam Igbe with other chiefs addressed newsmen at the Oba’s palace yesterday, saying that all those who were entitled to wear beads in Benin would cease to do so from the date of the announcement of the Emwinekhua.
Igbe on behalf of the BTC said the crowned prince, Edaiken N Uselu, Eheneden Erediauwa, had asked that the information relating to the ceremonies be made available to the people.
“Burial ceremonies – from the date of announcement of Emwinekhua (which will be announced later) within two weeks from now to the end of ceremonies, all funeral rites are prohibited.”
Chief Iyase said “all male citizens of Benin kingdom will as a rule be expected to clean shave the hair on their heads with effect from 29th April, 2016, in obedience to Benin tradition.
“Wearing of beads – all Chiefs, Enigies, priests, and palace functionaries who are entitled to wear beads as part of their normal wear will henceforth seize to wear beads from the date of the announcement. Instead, they will wear Omonorhue or white thread (Ikhian) until further notice.
“All our friends and well wishers, including all those who live with us and work for their livelihood within our kingdom, may wish to join us in this action
“All markets in Benin kingdom are to remain closed for three days after the announcement. We are sure that by now they are open and busy.”
He therefore urged all citizens of Benin to respect the custom and tradition of Benin Kingdom and be law abiding.
