Kogi State House of Assembly said it would review and harmonise amendments to the Local Government Law in operation from 2000 to 2011.
The new bill to that effect had its first reading on the floor of the House at plenary yesterday in Lokoja, titled: ‘A Bill for a Law to Provide for the Establishment, Composition, Structure, Finance and Function of Local Government Areas in Kogi State and Other Matters Connected Therewith’.
The bill is expected to repeal the existing law.
First reading of the bill followed the adoption of a report by the Ad-hoc Committee on the Review/Harmonisation of Kogi State Local Government Law at plenary, yesterday.
Presenting the report, Chairman of the committee, Mr John Abah (PDP-Ibaji), said the fifth Assembly started the review but could not complete it before the end of its tenure and the ad-hoc committee of the sixth Assembly took it up in view of its importance.
The lawmaker added that the State Local Government Law 2000 was severally amended between 2001 and 2008 and later in 2011, stressing that there is need for a review and harmonisation to clear identified ambiguities and lacunas in the various amendments.
He said the review was also necessary to enable the law address new exigencies of local government administration to enable it conform to administrative framework of the state and federal governments.
The chairman recommended that the Kogi Local Government Law 2000 (As amended) be repealed to give way to a new law to be known as ‘Kogi State Local Government Law 2016′.
Part of the provisions being considered, according to him, include the scaling up of the constitution of a transition committee from mere appointment of the governor to confirmation by the House for statutory recognition.
Kekere Abdulkareem (PDP-Okehi) moved for the adoption of the report and was seconded by Bello Abdullahi (APC-Ajaokuta).
