Director–General, National Boundary Commission, NBC, Dr. Mohammed Bose Ahmad, said reintroducing cattle tax will go a long way in addressing the incessant clash between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in the middle-belt region and other states.
Ahmad said this while receiving the Chairman, Afrimultibridgers Peace Initiative, Prince Nwenyi Chukwuemeka, who paid him a courtesy visit in his office, recently.
He said when cattle tax was effective in the northern part of the country, there was no conflict between communities and Fulani herdsmen, adding that tax remains a strong measure in keeping the data of herdsmen and their cattle, and also checkmate their movement from one location to another.
Ahmad said though the NBC was not established to interfere in this kind of issue, but he promised to give constructive advice to relevant authorities for the betterment of the country.
“My commission deals with boundary problems between Nigeria and its neighbours and any inter or intra boundary disputes between states, local government areas and communities in Nigeria, it can only give helpful advice that will benefit everybody, especially in a situation like Fulani herdsmen/farmers clash.
Earlier, Chukwuemeka advised the government, to as a matter of urgency, provide ranches or grazing land to take care of cattle and other herbivorous animals.
He revealed that his association would do its part in ensuring that peace is restored.
“We are concerned about the killing as a result of the fracas between the two groups. We have resolved to step in by enlightening and educating residents on the need for peaceful co-existence,” he said.
