It was a massive night for up-and-comer Nathi Mankayi who was crowned king of the 22nd Annual South African Music Awards held yesterday at Durban ICC, beating out stiff challenges from established stars and fellow newcomers alike.
Nathi smiled home with 5 awards following the huge success of his 2015 album Buyelekhaya and smash hit single Nomvula.
He won the Best R&B/Soul/Reggae Album, Best Newcomer, Best Male Artist, Best-selling Full-track Music Download and Best-selling Album of the Year.
Nathi is an ex-convict who spent four years behind bars for robbery. He was born in Maclear a small town near the Mooi River in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa.
A fine artist whose paintings have been displayed at an art gallery in Eastern Cape, he is one of a few artists in South Africa whose album has gone platinum in a matter of weeks after its release. His album Buyelekhaya, went platinum within six weeks of its release.
