Transparency Essential for Good Governance– Magu

The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, has described transparency as an essential ingredient for good governance.

Magu held the position in Ibadan on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 while featuring on a radio programme tagged ‘Office of the citizens’.

Speaking through the zonal head of the commission’s Ibadan Office, Friday Ebelo, on the topic ‘Open governance: A tool for development’, he charged Nigerians to always hold people occupying public offices to account on their promises and actions.

He said: “Citizens have the oversight function on public officials. They, therefore, hold it a duty to monitor their activities and call them to question whenever they are found wanting in their responsibilities to the people and country at large."

He also said only a government ran transparently benefits the people as they are held in high esteem by the leadership.

According to him, “For the people to derive benefits from any government, it has to be transparent in all its dealings, from the budgeting system through contracting to how revenues are generated and disbursed.

“If the government is transparent and the people have access to timely information, the system will be able to curtail the spread of rumours and hearsay because the people will be well informed.

“When the people are well informed, both the government and the governed will be able to operate harmoniously for the development of the country and benefit of the people."
