‘Influenza, most common hospital-acquired infection in UCH’

A family physician, Dr Achiaka Irabor has said that Influenza is the most common hospital-acquired infection at the University College Hospital, whose hand washing rate now stands at less than 12 per cent.

Irabor, Head, Total Quality Management Department, who spoke at the hospital’s health and safety day symposium, stated that the level of appropriate hand washing is below the World Health Organisation’s standard, although appropriate washing can reduce hospital-acquired infections by as much as 50 per cent.

The expert, who described hand washing as armour to create a barrier from infective organisms in the hospital environment, said other diseases people contract due to poor hand washing include cough, sore throat, runny and stuffy nose, chills, and sometimes diarrhoea and vomiting.
