Dr Junaid Mohammed is a frontline northern politician and a former federal lawmaker during the Second Republic. In this interview by DAPO FALADE, Mohammed declares that Nigeria, though now more troubled than it was 58 years before the attainment of independence, is not beyond redemption.

 

In less than 48 hours, Nigeria will be 58 as an independent nation. What are your expectations of this country, 58 years after?

If you like, describe it as something either important or historical or otherwise. Nigeria attained independence on October 1, 1960, but Nigeria has existed as an independent, sovereign state since as far back as 1914. So, I don’t know how significant the Independence Day is since we were given independence not as a result of any meaningful struggle. Actually, we negotiated with the British and we were given independence in 1960. We could have had it in 1957, but…
