Northern governors back FG on VAT, say power shift unconstitutional


THE Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has backed the Federal Government in its position that it is statutorily empowered to collect Value Added Tax (VAT) through its agency, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). 

The Court of Appeal had ruled that status quo be maintained in the collection of VAT, with the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Maklami, speaking at the recently-concluded United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York that FIRS will continue to collect VAT, following the ruling.
