Ogoni Clean-up: ERA trains 50 monitors

THE Environ-mental Rights Action, ERA, Friends of the Earth Nigeria, has trained no fewer than 50 persons on toxic management to monitor the clean-up exercise in the area by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Re-mediation Project, HYPREP.

The trainees, drawn from the four local government areas of Ogoni, Khana, Gokana, Tai and Eleme, were trained on skills to detect the state of a re-mediated site.

Speaking during the two-day Toxic Brigade Training for the Monitoring of the Clean-up of Oil Spills in Ogoniland and the Niger Delta in Tai, Marthar Agbani, the Executive Director of Lokiaka Development Centre, said that it is proper for the process to be monitored.

Agbani said: “We are training these youths in environmental toxic waste management. This is necessary so that when the companies clean up, we will have an alternative personnel to verify if it was done properly.’’
