Trader in court over alleged N24m rice fraud


A 37-year-old trader, Ada Obi,  was on Wednesday arraigned in an Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly obtaining 30,000 bags of rice worth N24 million from one Miss Moriamo Dosunmu under pretences.

The accused, who lives in Ebute-Metta Area of Lagos, is facing a four-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining under false pretences, threat to life and stealing.

The prosecutor, Asp Romanus Uniugbe, told the court that the matter was reported at the Police station by the complainant, Dosunmu on Aug 13.

He said that the accused committed the offence on Aug 13 at Iddo Market, Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

Uniugbe said the accused, with others at large, had fraudulently obtained 30,000bags of rice from Dosunmu with the promise to pay back after the sales of the items.

Uniugbe said rather fulfilling his promise, the accuse failed to remit the money.
