RECENT agitations for and against the dissolution of the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, are reflective of the self-centred zealousness that has derailed the attainment of the goals of the regional development agency.

The NDDC was conceptualised at the advent of the Fourth Republic with the specific mandate of ensuring the development of the Niger Delta region. The establishment of the agency followed years of caustic relations between successive federal administrations and the people of the region which peaked with the hanging of Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Ogoni Nine in November 1994 and the upsurge of militant agitations of Ijaw warlords in the creeks.
