House of Representatives yesterday said it would probe the controversial centenary city proposed by the last administration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
The House, therefore, mandated its Committee on Federal Capital Territory to thoroughly investigate the project put in place to celebrate 100 years of Nigeria’s nationhood and determine if it was done according to the extant laws.
This followed a motion moved Hon. Timothy Golu (Plateau-PDP) entitled ‘call for investigation of alleged irregularities surrounding the centenary city project.’
In his lead debate, Golu alleged that the centenary city project was marred with irregularities.
He said the project might have cost the federal government and the Federal Capital Development billions of Naira and loss of thousands of hectares of land.
The lawmaker was of the opinion that government was not supposed to be part of the project, adding that people were meant to be compensated.
In its resolution, the House mandated the committee to report back its findings within one month.
Nigerian Pilot recalls that the centenary city was put in place on January 1, 2014, and was to be funded by the private firms.
